Majestic Views of Devil's Lake in Wisconsin

DSituated in the heart of the ancient Baraboo Range near Baraboo, Wisconsin, Devil's Lake State Park is the state's largest, oldest, and most visited state park. Spanning over 10,000 acres, it is celebrated for its breathtaking scenery, rich geological history, and diverse year-round recreational opportunities.

Natural Marvels & Geology

The park’s defining feature is its stunning 360-acre lake, framed by magnificent, 500-foot pink quartzite bluffs that date back an estimated 1.6 billion years. Formed by the retreating glaciers of the last Ice Age, these sheer rock faces feature iconic formations like Devil's Doorway and Balanced Rock, which draw hikers, geologists, and traditional rock climbers from across the Midwest.

Cultural Significance

Long before it became a park in 1911, the area held deep cultural meaning. It rests on ancestral Ho-Chunk land, known as Tee Wakącąk (Sacred or Spirit Lake). Visitors can still view well-preserved, ancient Native American effigy moundsshaped like stylized animals, including a lynx and a sparrow.

Endless Recreation

Whether you are looking for an intense workout or a relaxing afternoon, Devil's Lake offers activities for every pace:

• Hiking: Nearly 30 miles of trails, including a premier segment of the 1,200-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

• Water Sports: Two expansive, sandy swimming beaches, excellent fishing, SCUBA diving, and kayak or canoe rentals.

• Camping & Winter Fun: Hundreds of campsites cater to overnight guests, while winter brings opportunities for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing.
